How to Convert Word 2007 Documents to Word 2003 Format

For Users of Office 97 Through Office 2003:

If you receive a Word document (or other Microsoft Office document) that cannot be read on your computer [.docx, .xlsx, etc.], you can download a free tool to convert it to a format that can be read by your version of Office.

Go to https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en to download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

Follow the instructions at that page to install it. After the installation, you will be able to open documents created by Office 2007 users.

For Users of Office 2007:

To save a 2007 Word document in a format that people using older versions of Office can open without requiring conversion, you need to change the file type from .docx to .doc using the following steps:

When you choose to save the document, at the bottom of the 'Save As' window, you will see that is says File name: Doc1.docx, and Save as type: Word Document (*.docx).

Click on the drop-down arrow for the 'Save as' type and select Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc), and then save the document as you normally would.
